Outsider's Day
Students created informative news articles that told both sides of the story for various events from the Outsider's novel complete with pictures and captions to bring more imagery into their articles. After presentations, students were able to experience Francis Ford Coppola's Outsider's as a "drive-in" movie in the gym with the entire 8th grade class. Great job dressing up as Greasers and Socs!

Activism Websites
Students researched and wrote strong argument essays. After polishing their final work, they published their pieces in websites they created using an online site creator. All websites housed their writing pieces along with images, charts, statistics, and a survey about their topics. They also created QR codes to display in the 8th grade hallway for all to peruse using the QR scanner they downloaded to their Chromebooks. Great job voicing your opinions on your chosen world issue. Use a QR scanner app to view the websites below the pictures.

Summer Reading Speed Dating
Students were able to spend 10 minutes with four summer reading books to decide whether they would continue "dating" the book or if it "wasn't their type." Some seemed to be in love at first sight. Great job utilizing our time well as the year closed. Hopefully you found at least one book you will read this summer.

Poem Feathers
Students decorated bird feathers with unique style and an assigned poem stanza that contains symbolic bird references. Once we finish reading Audacity, students will choose three stanzas from these poems and compare the three different ways bird symbolism is used in both texts.

Poetry Reading
Students are reading the novel-in-verse, Audacity by Melanie Crowder. Each student takes a turn reading one poem aloud in front of the class to practice pacing, pausing, pronunciation, volume and inflection while the class follows along and takes notes on events, identifying symbolism and interpreting its meaning. We have had impactful, effective reading by so many of you. Good job!

Writing Workshop
Students use "Free Write Friday" to get their creativity flowing. They may use a story starter online, a RAFT from class, or write about a recent experience. These may be stories they add to using lessons from class, revise, and edit later for a possible WRITE AWAY! entry. Some humorous fiction and serious science fiction stories were shared with the class today. Very creative!

Mystery Sensory Bags
Students were able to experience all five senses and try to describe what was hidden inside the bags without giving away the actual item. Then their partner tried to guess the object from their well-written description. They later applied their newly acquired adjectives to their Fractured Fairy Tale Narratives. In one group, students paired up with students from Mrs. Woolf's class and became guides during the activity. Great job staying on task!

Pieces of Poe
Students presented their writing partner's literary analysis paper of Poe's author's craft to the class including topic, advice given, outcome of that advice, and strengths of the piece. Finally, each chose a favorite excerpt to read aloud from their partner's work. All presentations were well done while Poe himself looked on in approval from a prior project students constructed of descriptions and facts of Poe's tumultuous life and work.

Students face word challenges daily to uncover the cryptic English language. Whether they are given a prefix, root, suffix, or full word, they work tirelessly until one team achieves the goal in the allotted time. Wonderful determination and use of your background knowledge to define each piece of the words.
