Making Smiles
Students were so excited to see their buddies after MCAS. The 8th graders read a chapter from Frog and Toad, called The Letter, to the class. Then the groups created their own special messages in pop-up cards for someone they knew who needed a smile. Great job working together!

Flip Side
Students researched and took notes on their assigned section of the Presidential Film Festival & Events leading up to the beginning of the Civil War. Then they worked in groups to recreate green paper money, silver or gold coins with phrases and images representing the positive and negative issues surrounding the presidency or event. The presentations included their thoughtful weighing of the two sides of the issues and a final determination that their topic was either good or bad overall for the US.

SEL Photography Letter Posters
Students in each class were assigned a letter in an unrevealed motivational phrase inspired by the Hunking P.R.I.D.E. motto. Once they found a photography image in the world that looked like the letter, they were then instructed to write down a problem on the back of the paper that is getting in the way of a goal they have for themselves. After lifting it over their heads and flipping the paper, their problems were "behind" them. Then they each wrote a motivational message to themselves embedded on the front of their letter to help them overcome their issue. Finally, they decorated their "piece of the puzzle" in neon colors. Once assembled, every student can see how they represent part of their class poster. We could not be complete without each one of you! Great job!

Amendment Presentations
Students chose an amendment to research and present to the class. Using the strategies learned in our group analysis of the Constitution, students independently interpreted the amendment's text, researched associated court cases or newspaper articles, and conveyed any notable activists who supported or denounced the amendment. Students added essential images and clarifying videos. Great research and creativity.

Constitution Analysis
Students worked in groups to analyze the "supreme law of the land" on several comprehension levels. After identifying difficult vocabulary, students then used key words to summarize, reveal one of the seven constitutional principles, and present to the class their final critique of their assigned section. Students read every inch of the Constitution and were able to convey its purpose with confidence. Great job analyzing!

SEL Ripple Effect Challenge
Students read an article about the power of negative AND positive words in the form of gossip. They practiced "talking good behind people's backs" by writing compliments to each other on the paper affixed to their backs. After visiting each member of the class, they returned to their seats, read all of their positive comments, and had to write down someone or something they should thank for being so awesome. Their homework was to give a compliment or thank the person they reflected upon as the second level of the ripple effect.

SEL Positive Puzzles Challenge
After watching videos and discussing the power of positive words, students practiced their positive talk by directing blindfolded students in making puzzles. The challenge was that for every puzzles piece point they had connected, they had to subtract any negative words used in instruction.

Students were grouped and assigned a Tax or Act from Pre-Revolutionary Times. They prepared their own persuasive speeches and protest posters to
re-enact outside on the rooftop classroom. Students used vital details and called colonists to action to fight for their cause. This was summed up with a vote by audience members for the most persuasive speech and poster in the class. Congratulations to the winners and for braving the cold to make your voices heard!

Bobcat Buddies Thanksgiving Play
Our buddies invited us to see their dress rehearsal of their Thanksgiving History Play. After watching the amazing performances, buddies worked together on writing a letter to a great cause. Perhaps Hunking will be the next school to receive a "buddy bench" for the Lower School outdoor playground so students will never feel alone.

Students conveyed their knowledge of Colonial times through a mixed media quilt square project. They gathered ideas from their reading in regards to religion, politics, economy, war, education, and publishing and compared the topics to modern times. Students then presented their American quilt stories of "then and now" describing the symbols and depictions they chose to represent both eras. Amazing work!
